Doppler and ABPI or LOI in screening for arterial disease Kathryn

چکیده
Kathryn Vowden, Peter Vowden Doppler ultrasound is frequently used as a screening tool when assessing patients for arterial disease. The use of Doppler ultrasound to calculate the ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) has been tested for reliability and reproducibility and has been found to be an accurate technique when used regularly by appropriately trained practitioners. An alternative to Doppler has been suggested using pulse oximetry to calculate the Lanarkshire Oximetry Index (LOI), which has been described as a feasible alternative to ABPI. This article compares the techniques and discusses the implications for practice.

ABPI against Colour Duplex Scan: A Screening Tool for Detection of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Low Resource Setting Approach to Validation
Background. In Sri Lanka the ABPI has not been used as a screening tool to detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in epidemiological studies. This study was conducted to determine the best cutoff value of ABPI to detect PAD in Sri Lankan population. Methods. The ABPI measured by arterial Doppler to detect PAD was validated against colour duplex scan as the criterion using 165 individuals refe...
متن کاملAn evaluation of the efficacy of methods used in screening for lower-limb arterial disease in diabetes.
OBJECTIVE Foot-related disease is the most common cause for hospital admission among the diabetic population. Lower-limb peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is a major risk factor in diabetic foot disease. Screening for PAOD commonly includes foot pulses and the ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) and/or the toe-brachial pressure index (TBI), but concerns persist regarding their accur...
متن کاملDetection of peripheral arterial disease with an improved automated device: comparison of a new oscillometric device and the standard Doppler method
In occidental countries, peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is an important health issue; however, most subjects are asymptomatic (~50%) and therefore undiagnosed and untreated. Current guidelines recommend screening for PAD in primary care setting using ankle brachial index (ABI) in all patients with cardiovascular risks. This is, however, not performed strictly because the standard Doppler met...
متن کاملEvaluation of an automated ankle- brachial pressure index calculator in a nurse-led leg ulcer clinic
Holistic assessment of leg ulceration is vital prior to the implementation of effective, person-centred treatment pathways and should include the following: past medical and social history, physical examination, structured wound assessment, pain assessment, mobility assessment, clinical investigations and assessment of arterial blood flow (Moffatt, 2008). The Management of Chronic Venous Leg Ul...

OBJECTIVES To investigate, in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), the association between the level of the Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) at time of diagnosis and clinical outcome. METHODS The data set of the Limburg PAOD Longitudinal Study (n=3649, mean follow-up time 7.2 years) was analyzed for this purpose. The ABPI was measured by trained personnel using handheld Dopple...
